This post is mostly unrelated to real estate but it probably affects almost all of you. Why do you sometimes receive phone calls that are from similar numbers to yours but are often hang-ups or scam calls? This is a problem that affects so many people and businesses including ours. A scammer automatically dials your number from a program and "spoofs" the caller ID to make it look like it's a similar number to yours and is increasing the likelihood that you'll pick up. Have you ever missed a call then called that number back to ask why they called you? Often the person may say that they didn't ever call you. Their number was spoofed and the number you called back actually belongs to someone else. If you have an app on your cell phone that blocks or alerts you to potential scam calls that can help. The problem is that your app will mistakenly identify real calls from real people as a scam because a scammer "spoofed" that number previously and someone else marked that number as a scam. What can the average Joe do about this? Not too much unfortunately. See what the FCC has to say about this huge problem and their push for "Caller ID Authentication".
