Moving is all about budgeting your time and energy—when is the best moment to start packing? At what stage do you pack away your TV? How long will you need to finish packing everything? With lots of logistics to think about, it’s understandable that you’d run into a few roadblocks. Here are four common moving issues and tips for avoiding them. Moving Without HelpThe chances are good that you have better things to do with your time than spend hours a day for weeks on end packing and lugging heavy boxes into a moving truck. When moving on your own puts you at risk for everything from back injuries to sore fingers, you’re better off leaving several aspects of the moving process to the professionals. It may cost you a few dollars, but you’ll save plenty in time and comfort. Not Allotting Enough TimeEven haphazard, last-minute packing takes a long time, and, truthfully, you should try to pack thoughtfully. While this will end up taking more time in the moment, it will make move-in much easier. Devote boxes to specific parts of rooms, like a “linen closet” box or a “kitchen cabinet” box. Be realistic when planning your packing schedule—a one-bedroom apartment will take two days of dedicated work, a two-bedroom place will take around three days, and a three-bedroom could take up five days. Budgeting IncorrectlyBefore it’s time to start loading up boxes, take a while to figure out what your budget should look like. While moving boxes and packing tape may not be too expensive, it’s easy to underestimate the cost of a moving truck. Once you figure out an approximate budget, consider adding in an extra 10–20 percent as contingency money. Not Packing an Essentials BagInstead of packing away your wallet, ID, and keys, set these essentials aside and put them into their own travel bag that you take with you on the trip. You may also want to put together a moving box with some day-one necessities for when you start unpacking—things like toilet paper, shampoo, soap, towels, and other comfort essentials. Now that you understand these four common moving issues and tips for avoiding them, start packing with a plan! Moving without any kind of help does sound extremely difficult. With how much furniture we need to move nowadays, I feel like this would be near impossible to do by ourselves without tiring ourselves out for the coming days. I'll take your advice and hire a house moving expert that can handle all of the heavy furniture for us right away.
